Titirangi Community Arts Council

The Titirangi Community Arts Council (TCAC) is a community organisation, funded partly by Waitakere City Council and charged with promoting arts at the local level. The TCAC has governance of the Upstairs Gallery – a public gallery that shows approximately 12 exhibitions per year. Around 1200 people visit per month and there are approximately 180 financial members.

At the Upstairs Gallery you will find an exhibition space that represents community arts and emerging artists. From the annual schools exhibition to exciting shows from local artists,  the Upstairs Gallery is always worth a visit.

Open seven days from 10am until 4:30pm. Free entry.

The Titirangi Community Arts Council (TCAC) started life in 1982 supporting community arts projects in the Titirangi area including running arts activities and distributing small grants.

The current focus of the TCAC is on the exhibition programme at the Upstairs Gallery in Lopdell House.

Our Vision is: That the Titirangi Community Arts Council (TCAC) is recognized as supporting creative and collaborative activities in the Community.

Our Mission Statement is: Providing opportunities for participation in Arts practices by supporting emerging artists, community access and volunteer involvement.

Supporting Community Access and Emerging Artists in WaitakereCity


Emerging Artists, Community Groups and Artists wishing to Exhibit in the Upstairs Gallery are invited to submit their Proposal to the TCAC. Submissions are presented for review at the TCAC Committee meeting on the second Wednesday of each month.

Group submissions should contain a statement about the group’s purpose and ethos, with images of previous works if possible.

Artist Portfolio’s should contain images of recent works, a resume of any Exhibitions attended, an Artists statement about themselves and their work, and full contact details, including an email address if possible.

Often the TCAC elects to offer the opportunity to exhibit with other artists in order to minimize costs to individuals, effectively giving exposure to greater numbers of Emerging Artists.

Creative Communities Funding

Grants

The Titirangi Community Arts Council receives funding from Waitakere City Council and Creative New Zealand to run arts activities, to run the Upstairs Gallery and to distribute to community groups as grants. These grants are in the vicinity of $750.

Our Purpose

The purpose of the Creative Communities Scheme is to provide financial assistance to groups and individuals for local arts and cultural activities. ‘Arts’ is broadly defined to mean any ‘creative practice’, including those relating to language, literature, performing arts and visual arts.

Our Aim

The aim of the Creative Communities Scheme is to increase the number of people participating in arts and cultural activities at a local level, widen the range of arts available and community interest in them, support artistic and cultural expressions by diverse communities.

What will not be funded

  • Facility development
  • Purchase of art works for galleries
  • Ongoing administrative costs that are not related to a specific project
  • Repayment of debt or interest on that debt
  • School programmes (which would normally be funded through the ongoing curriculum operating budget)
  • Costs already incurred for projects already completed
  • Catering costs
  • Fund raising costs
  • Applications from groups who have received funding but did not complete a certificate of expenditure and provide evidence of expenditure
