Stephen builds layer on layer of colour and textures, creating depth and insight and an emotional connection that is hard to resist. Stephen, like many artists of his calibre does not seek to explain, define or analyse his art, but invites the viewer to explore, engage and interpret, sometimes finding the work harmonious, sometimes unsettling but always dramatic.

Stephen’s work is in private collections throughout the UK and New Zealand. Since becoming a full time artist, he has experimented with different mediums creating an impressive body of work and winning accolades and awards along the way.

Artists use a visual language to express an idea, a mood or narrative.  For the artist it is the making and the process of creating the work that expresses what words cannot and the end result is a visual language unique to the maker.

SALT is a group of artists who gather together each week to explore their creative passions.  Most of the artists either live in or have links with the west, have some degree of tertiary art training and find working in this artist community a rewarding experience.  They take a contemporary approach working with traditional materials (and some not so traditional) and are happy to embrace the accidental if it occurs in the process. They believe it is as much about the process of making and experimentation as it is about the outcome.

Our 5th Emerging Artist Awards exhibition for those that are still finding their 'art feet' with two fortunate artists coming away with an arts grant to help further their arts careers.
Two respected judges will award two grants to fresh new talent – one $1000 Arts West Grant, including a plaque that the artist will hold for one year, a feature article in Gallery36 online magazine, and one $500 Arts West Grant.

This concept was developed to bring out our hidden (emerging) talent – the ones that have had little or no exposure to the public - and assist them by guiding them through a number of processes they will need to understand as they emerge: applications for awards, competitions, funding – exhibiting – advertising – building databases of buyers, galleries etc.
The Emerging Artists Awards Grants have a mandatory ‘accountability process’ that the recipients will also be guided through. The grants must be spent to further artistic endeavor (not to catch up on unpaid fines etc :-)).

POV ! Connections is an exhibition of the unusual, contrastingand unexpected.

Connections are often dependent on your Point Of View.

Ellen Kerssens uses video and still images to explore thisconcept, which is both local and global.

Interactive works that change the time and space contained within everyday objects - venetian blinds and old photographs. 

 By opening the blinds, the viewer becomes a participant by discovering new views of very personal yet shared histories. 

 Are we blind to the past or are our perceptions filtered by the present?

Liz Mertens reveals her omnipresent passion for flora with a mostly delicate, sometimes fierce, ceramic exhibition of flowers, petals, roots and seed pods. Joined by Annie Bonza who displays her beautifully handcrafted gowns; adding the ultimate touch of femininity.

Created with elegance, a subtle twist and bold colours, Maxine’s life-long passion for textiles and fibres reveals itself energetically with her latest collection of fibre sculptures.

These delightful sculptures have been realised from a lifetime of creative exploits within the worlds of window dressing, calico sculpture, textile wall art, couture textile jewellery and ceramic object art.

Maxine will be at the gallery each Sunday afternoon for the duration of the exhibition.

"I have been making things for most of my life. I am a sculptor and my medium has been ceramics. I have a curiosity about how human identities are formed which has led me to research areas that might underpin the formation of identity.
