Elise Ure (2008)

Elise Ure and Rachel2008 TCAC Emerging Artist Award Winner: Elise Ure
Rachel - Oil

Three years ago I left high-school feeling that the formal environment was not allowing me to meet my own needs as a creative person.

As a free thinker I immersed myself in personal studies. Eventually I felt brave enough to give in to the temptations of oil paints. what a find! I quickly applied my growing knowledge of the human form and attempted portraiture.

A year or so later of painting, observing and hours of self discovery that have led me to find passion in the human form and, strangely, in architecture, environments and spaces, I have found what it is that set's my mind alight with pleasure.

It is now my dream to apply these loves into my work. I have yet to achieve this, but I look forward to a lifetime of closing the gap between now and then.

Judges Comments
This work combined may different aspects that work on a lot of levels. It is technically very strong. The subject matter is interesting and intriguing. It is humorous, has mystery, playfulness and seriousness. The artist has pulled off the idea, technique and emotion very well.

A note from Elise (15 June 2009)
Art is going well. I'm finishing up my last family portrait but am itching to get into something new.
I've been fawning over the work of Jeremy Lipking and Casey Baugh (when aren't I really) and the urge to paint some nude figures is playing on me. Something about the human form huh.
My goal to produce a website has fallen back a few places on my list as now I have a possible three weeks of solid jury duty and a mural to paint at my local church.
I'm also doing a lot of research into Architecture and draughting. I hope to study it in the near future, but have to see what courses are running and where.
